General Motors Announced A $4 Billion Investment In Its Orion Township Assembly Last Year

ORION TOWNSHIP, Mich. General Motors announced a $4 billion investment in its Orion Township Assembly last year to transform it to make EV Silverado pickups.

When announced, one thing was clear, the pothole-laden mess surrounding the plant and the immediate commercial corridor had to go.

We cant open the most state-of-the-art plant on planet earth with infrastructure that doesnt support it, said Orion Township Supervisor Chris Barnett. Some of our gravel roads are in better shape.

The 2.6-mile stretch of Giddings, Silverbell, and Brown roads has been awful for years but lobbying the county wasnt working, and Lansing wasnt ready to commit either.

Barnett, a Republican, found a partner in Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, a Democrat. Through their work and bipartisanship, Slotkin announced $7 million in federal dollars, which will pay for rebuilding the roads, not just a patch job.

Senator Gary Peters managed to secure $1 million to add to it, which means that not only the plant but the Brown Road commercial corridor is getting an upgrade with talks of a new hospital facility being placed there as well.

Im such an advocate for regionalism and bipartisanship, Barnett said. We have to work together across city and county lines. It just makes sense.

Federal Government To End Snap Emergency Benefits After February

CINCINNATI – Ohio Department of Job and Family Services announced last Tuesday that monthly emergency payments allotted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic are coming to an end.

The Families First Coronavirus Response Act allowed states to request emergency allotments to help assist the food budget of SNAP households since March 2020. The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 ended the program, ODJFS said.

Recently passed federal legislation is bringing the temporary SNAP allotment to an end after February, said ODJFS Director Matt Damschroder. We will be communicating to recipients, county agencies, and our partners such as foodbank, that normal SNAP payment will resume in March.

This means that final emergency allotments will be paid in late February, and as of March, SNAP recipients will only receive one regular monthly payment.

Ohio recipients can manage benefits through the Ohio Benefits website or by contacting their county Department of Job and Family Services.

In a meeting Tuesday, Hamilton County Commissioners proposed an action plan to help bridge the gap.

It includes launching a 513-relief bus to make families aware of their options and funneling leftover funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to places like food pantries and diaper banks in hamilton county.
